Travel Blog: A Legacy to Remember; Fiesta of the Conversion of St. Paul in Vigan

“Apo San Pablo, Agyaman kami kadagiti bendisyon ken parabor a dimteng iti biag mi. ikararag mi iti naragsak a panang celebrar mi iti Fiesta ni Apo San Pablo.”

This heartfelt line, recited by a child before the evening showdown of the Fiesta of the Conversion of St. Paul, set the tone for the celebration. Hearing it gave me goosebumps and have sent chills down my spine, as if I were time-traveling into Vigan’s colorful and rich cultural legacy. In that moment, I felt deeply connected to the faith, traditions, and vibrant spirit that make the Heritage City of Vigan truly special.

The Heritage City of Vigan is celebrated for its rich culture, Spanish colonial architecture, and vibrant traditions. Every January, Bigueños honor the Fiesta of the Conversion of St. Paul, a grand event filled with parades, competitions, dances, and food festivals. This year, I had the chance to witness the celebration, and it was truly unforgettable.

The streets overflowed with locals and visitors enjoying parades, street performances, and the famous Longganisa Festival. Families and communities gathered, making the city lively and joyful while showcasing Vigan’s unity and heritage.

On January 22, 2026, I joined the crowd with my closest friends—people I truly value. Together, we cheered for performers from different schools and groups, including our own Ilocos Sur National High School (ISNHS). Supporting our classmates made the event even more meaningful, especially when our school won in one of the contests.

One highlight was watching our classmate Diana Rose perform in the Longganisa Festival Dance. The dancers wore vibrant costumes and delivered lively choreography that celebrated Vigan’s famous delicacy. Their energy captured the essence of Vigan’s culture and cuisine, leaving the audience in awe.

The youth performers gave us goosebumps with their high-energy routines and precise synchronization. Wide, exaggerated steps and dynamic formations drew everyone’s attention. By blending traditional movements with modern styles, they created performances that were both exciting and visually striking. Props such as fans and banners added flair, making the dances even more colorful and memorable.

The Fiesta of the Conversion of St. Paul reveals the true beauty of Vigan—its strong faith, preserved culture, and warm people. Witnessing this celebration made me grateful to see how the Bigueños keep their heritage alive.

It is more than just a festival; it is a celebration of identity, unity, and tradition. Truly, moments like these prove why It’s More Fun in the Philippines.”
